Did You Know?
- The Pampas Cat is a South American feline also known as the Chilean Pampas Cat or the Grass Cat
- There are 5 different sub-species of the Pampas Cat, however, studies are being conducted in which three of those sub-species may actually be different species.
- Surprisingly very little is known about these South American cats and unsurprisingly, the sub-species vary tremendously (I guess that is why they are about to be named individual species)
Habitat and Distribution of the Pampas Cat
As mentioned, there is very little known about this cat, however, here is what we do know. The Pampas Cat is a small feline found in parts of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. Some reports have indicated that this cat can also be found in southwestern Columbia but those are just reports, so if you happen to see one over there, make sure you let someone know. These predators prefer living in grasslands, dry forests, pampas habitat (obviously) and any scrubland they can find below elevation of 5000 meters. I suppose they are afraid of heights, so maybe you won’t need to worry about calling the fire department to get your pet Pampas Cat down from your front yard tree (actually, this probably isn’t the case as some zoo kept species have been observed spending a large amount of time in the trees).
Mean or Just Hungry?
Throughout their open and dry habitat live a variety of small mammals such as rodents, chinchillas and guinea pigs that provide an excellent source of protein for our healthy feline friend. If they are in the mood for something different, they may also feast upon any small birds they come across. In fear of making the Pampas Cat look like a big ol’ bully, they have been known to steal penguin eggs and chicks straight from the nest. Now, I know everyone loves penguins and this seems like a horrible thing but you have to remember these cats need to eat as well…and perhaps the penguin should have paid closer attention to their nest instead of worrying about their uber cute tuxedo.
