I am guessing you have already checked out the awesome photo site above and you have come back to learn a little more about the Canada Lynx. So let’s get started!
Well Adapted to Winter Life
The Canada Lynx are typically found throughout the forest and tundra areas of Canada. Although, these crafty, felines can also be found in parts of the northern United States and of course in Alaska. This majestic creature is well equipped to handle the harsh seasons of Canada and the Northern USA. For instance, they have thick coats and very wide paws. These coats obviously protect them from the cold, winter climates while the large paws act as snowshoes allowing the Canada Lynx to float on top of the snow as they chase down their favourite prey, the snowshoe hare.
The Patient Lynx
Since the Canada Lynx is not the swiftest cat in the forest, they have to rely on other methods to catch their prey. For instance, they choose to hunt at night where their strong vision and hearing gives them a slight advantage. As well, this lynx species demonstrates an incredible amount of patience as they have been known to wait in the same hiding spot for hours….before pouncing on the unsuspecting prey that wanders by. As mentioned, the main prey item for this cat is the snowshoe hair, however, when they can’t be found the lynx will feast on smaller mammals, birds and in rare occasions, larger animals such as caribou. I guess nobody is safe around a hungry Canada Lynx.
Canada Lynx Fast Fact
The male Canada Lynx is a solitary creature and is only found socializing with other cats during their mating season, which just happens to be during the winter months. The females on the other hand tend to keep the company of their kittens and will obviously also come together with other lynxes during the winter breeding season.
