Some animals are so rare that we never really know about them. One of the reasons why we haven’t is probably because they aren’t so attractive, or they are part of an endangered species, thus they are hard to find, almost non-existent.

Well, it is time to shed some light on these lesser known species. Let’s steer away from the animals that we all know and love and move towards the more obscure species sharing our planet. Here are 7 animals you had no idea existed.

Like we said, this is an animal that we’ve never heard of because they are a species that is endangered, or nearing extinction. They’re not exactly attractive either, because they sort of look like alligators or crocodiles with super narrow mouths.

Gharials are also known as the fish eating crocodile, and there are only 235 of them left, as a result of habitat loss and poor fishing practices.

They are also one of the longest members of the crocodile family, as they measure up to 20.5 feet or 6.25 meters and they are found in the rivers of the Indian subcontinent, from the Irrawaddy river in the east to the Indus River in the west.

Let’s highlight a cute animal this time. This tiny and super cute animal can be found in eastern and northern mainland Australia. The Sugar Glider is very similar to the Flying Squirrel. It’s name is based on their choice of food, mainly sugary sweet nectar, and their ability to glide through the air. Although they are not endangered, most people outside of Australia are not aware of there existence. We actually wonder why since they’re so cute to look at.

Try not to get in the water when this fish is around, well, unless you like having scary nightmares. This fish that is commonly found in South America is closely related to the piranha. Although they mainly eat seeds and nuts unlike their carnivorous counterpart.

Pacu fish have a set of teeth that resembles a human’s which makes them a strange sight to see, but they do bite and bite hard if you’re not careful enough, so watch your hands.

They are also called a “Hook-lipped” rhinoceros because of the shape of their mouth, and as you might expect, they are unfortunately on the critically endangered species list. The western black rhino, which is part of the subspecies, was declared extinct 4 years ago due to constant poaching, by humans for their horns.

They can be found in eastern and central Africa, specifically in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Angola to name a few. They are also one of the oldest living mammals on Earth, which sort of makes them living fossils. Unfortunately, even with efforts to preserve their species, poaching is still evident today, thus the dwindling population of the black rhino.

Commonly called spiny backed orb weavers, this species of spiders are called such because of the visible spines on their abdomen. They can be as big as 30 millimeters in diameter, measured from one spike to another. Despite having similarities in appearance with a crab spider, they are very much different and they are generally harmless to us humans.

They also come in different colors too.

1.
